Pages 46 - 50
Effects of various parameters related to prostate gland, such as age, volume, total prostate specific antigen (PSA), complex PSA (cPSA), free/total PSA (f/t PSA) and PSA density (PSAD) on free PSA (fPSA) activity was investigated by comparing the correlation coefficients of these variables in various ranges of age and prostate volume. Hundred and nine consequative patients with the complaints of prostatism comprised the study after having undergone digital rectal examination and transrectal ultrasonography to rule out prostate cancer. Free PSA was found to be relatively influenced by volume, tPSA, cPSA and PSAD, but this influence showed differences in various value ranges

Pages 51 - 56
In this study, we investigated the erythrocyte indexes, hemogram results and the etiological causes in patients with iron deficiency anemia in Van. Totally 370 patients (115 male, 255 female) were enrolled in the study between 1996-1998 years. Mean age of the males and the females were found 41.9 and 32.5 respectively. Mean value for hemoglobin was found 8.82 g/dl in males and 8.78 g/dl in females, for hematocrit 28.7% in males and 28.6% in females, for MCV 72.0 fl in males and 70.81fl in females, for RDW 17.02 in males and 17.12 in females, for ferritin levels 6.45 in males and 4.58 in females. In both groups the most important etiological cause was found to be increased iron loss. Iron loss occurred mostly from gastrointestinal tractus in males and from genital tractus in females. Nutritional deficiency of iron, intestinal parasitosis and pica were less frequent etiological causes. In conclusion, there was no important difference for etiological causes and hematologic parameters in Van from other regions of the country.

Pages 57 - 59
We aimed to assess the tubal sterilization performed cases in Obstetric and Gynecology clinic of Yüzüncü Yıl University Medicine faculty. In this retrospective study, tubal sterilization performed cases were evaluated according to their age, and obstetric history, in addition to used incisions for tubal sterilization, type of tubal sterilization procedure, surgical technique and postoperative complications between December 1994 and 1998. The total number of performed tubal sterilization was compared with the total number of vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, gynecologic operations, hospitalized and policlinic patients in the same period. The total number of performed tubal ligation was 276 and the mean age, mean number of pregnancy, delivery and alive child of these cases were 34.1, 7.4, 6.1 and 5.4, respectively. Tubal sterilization was performed by the route of laparoscopy in 41.3% and laparotomy in 58.7% cases. The timing of tubal sterilization was the most common in far away from pregnancy period and followed by at the time of cesarean section and in puerperal period. The commonly used surgical technique for tubal sterilization was Pomeroy or electrocauterization+transection. The relative ratio of tubal sterilization to number of vaginal delivery, cesarean section, gynecologic operation, hospitalized and policlinic patients were 4%, 32%, 33%, 9% and 1%, respectively. Tubal sterilization is an effective and irreversible contraceptive method performed both by the route of laparoscopy or minilaparotomy. Indicated couples especially living in rural areas must be encouraged for tubal ligation as an alternative contraceptive method. We have not yet reach our aimed ratios for tubal sterilization. In our opinion, tubal sterilization must be performed more extensively in our region because of low sociocultural and economic status.

4. Respiratory distress syndrome and surfactant replacement therapy.

Pages 60 - 62
In this article, the clinical and laboratory findings of 48 preterm newborns whose were followed with the diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in our hospital were stuied and the importance of surfactant therapy was emphasized. Between July 1996 and May 2000, 48 preterm infants with RDS were admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Twenty-eight infants were replaced with surfactant but twenty-one weren’t. The mortality rate and complications were similar in both groups (p>0.05). Because, the sepsis and pneumonia rates were higher in surfactant group. Finally, although we use surfactant theraphy to preterm infants with RDS, we couldn’t decrease mortalite rate and complications because of our high sepsis and pneumonia rate.

5. Delayed Tracheo Bronchial A case of Foreign Body Aspiration: Wild Barley (Hordeum Murinum)
Vedat Bakan, Burhan Köseoğlu, Önder Önem, Salim Bilici
Pages 63 - 65
Foreign body aspiration is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in childhood. Foreign body aspiration in patients who have history of recurrent lower respiratory infection and resistance to treatment may be the real cause of disease. A case in which segmentectomy was performed because of delay in diagnosis of foreign body aspiration was reported and importance of early diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy was stressed.

6. Bipolar Disorder in Adolescents : A Report of Three Cases
Kemal Sayar, Mücahit Öztürk, Ö. Akil Özer
Pages 66 - 71
Bipolar Disorder in adolescence may manifest itself differently from adult life and hence may be the subject of wrong diagnoses. Juvenile onset depressions may turn into bipolar states in adult life. Mixed or rapid cycling mania is more prevalent in adolescents compared to adults. In this article, we discuss the clinical features and differential diagnosis of bipolar disorder in adolescence by giving three case presentations. Also treatment options in bipolar disorder are reviewed.

Pages 72 - 74
In this paper, a very rare varicella case that acquired in perinatal period is presented. The infection occurred during pregnancy can cause spontan abortion, congenital varicella syndrome which is characterized by various anomalies, and rash on the skin. A 14-day-old newborn, admitted with rash on the skin, fever and failure of suck, and diagnosed perinatal varicella infection, and treated with acyclovir successfully is presented due to rare presentation.

8. Complications of Rhinosinusitis
Mustafa Erkan, Mehmet Somdaş
Pages 75 - 79
Sinusitis is a leading health-care problem with an increasing prevalence and incidence. Complications and local extension of paranasal sinus infections most often involve intraorbital and intracranial tissues. Early recognition of complications can decrease mortality and morbidity. In this paper, we rewieved the current literature in order to study the complications of rhinosinusitis.

9. N-Acetyl -β-D Glucosaminidase and Its Use in Renal Diseases
Tevfik Noyan, M. Ramazan Şekeroğlu, Haluk Dülger
Pages 80 - 83
N-acetyl -β-D glucosaminidase (NAG) is the most widely used urinary enzyme asaay for the assesment of renal disase and the detection of nephrotoxicity. It is the most active of glycosidases found in the lysosomes in the proximal tubule. An increase in NAG activity in urine is a sensitive test for renal tubular damage, since its relative molecular mass (M.W. ≥ 130000) precludes its filtration by the glomerulus. The isoenzyme profile of NAG in urine varies at different stages of renal disease and damage. In this paper, NAG and knowledges which are its use in renal diseases are summarized.
