Pages 1 - 4
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of magnesium the supplementation by the drinking water supplied to Wistar albino rats fed to the hypercholesterolemic diet on serum total cholesterol, total tryglycerides ,glucose, calcium and magnesium levels. Before and after the experiment, the bloods were taken from the tail veins of the animals. Male Wistar albino rats were divided into two groups: rats fed with hypercholesterolemic diet (60% cow and sheep brain freshly and 40% standart rat chop) no Mg in drinking water and rats fed with the same hypercholesterolemic diet with Mg supplementation in drinking water .After the 25 days, rats with Mg supplementation had lower ( p< 0.05) total cholesterol, triglycerides levels compared with the group did not take the Mg supplementation. It is concluded that Mg supplementation in the patients with hypercholesterolemia may be an effective hypocholesterolemic agent without any adverse effect except in the high sensitive persons or the serious kidney insufficiency.

Pages 5 - 7
The effects of yoghurt on serum cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, total protein and albumin were investigated in rats assigned to two dietary treatments for 90 days: 1) Commercial rodent chaw and water (control) 2) Commercial rodent chaw and yoghurt made from milk inoculated with a 3% (Vol/vol) liquid culture of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus (yoghurt). The mean values for serum triglycerides concentrations and protein concentrations were significantly decreased when yoghurt was fed on 90 days. Total cholesterol, glucose and albumin were not affected by yoghurt.

Ataxia is a very important sign in some central and peripheral nervous system diseases. When the tumor is small or there is not spinal seeding curability rate incrcases. This will cause increased life quality anddecreased mortality. Because of thisataxsia is a very important sign especially in the posterior fossa tumors and it has a very important role in the early diagnosis and treatment. In this article, we discussed the importance and role of ataxia in the childhood posterior fossa tumors a propos of ten cases we have had treated

The aim of this study was to detect whether the patients with hypertension have the information on hypertension and have shown compliance to their treatments. So we can get some ideas on how to get prevention in the health care services. We have interviewed with 100 hypertensive patients (mean age 5613 year, 62 female), who have been known to have hypertension for at least 6 months. The patients were evaluated in the Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Primary Health Care Centers. According to the results of the study, we have observed that the patients with hypertension in our region, especially female patients, have not sufficient acknowledgement on their problems and have very low level of education. Finally we have considered that the patients educated on their diseases have showed significantly compliance to the treatment regimen more than uneducated ones.

5. Chest Pain in Mitral Valve Prolapse : Its Relationship With Psychological Factors
Kemal Sayar, Mehmet Özkan
Pages 15 - 19
The relationship between pain and psychological factors is well-known. Chest pain may appear as a manifestation of depression or panic disorder. Chest pain is a frequently encountered symptom by patients with mitral valve prolapse. The etiology of pain in MVP patients is not well-documented, though organic factors are suspected. In this study we are searching for any possible interlink between psychological factors and chest pain in mitral valve prolapse patients. 45 patients with mitral valve prolapse were dichotomized according to presence of chest pain. The chest pain group and the patients with no pain were compared to each other by using self-report scales. No significant difference in the levels of psychopathology were detected between the two groups. These findings show that psychological factors do not have a primary role in the pathogenesis of chest pain in MVP patients.

Pages 20 - 24
Cardiovascular autonomic system neuropathy (CAN) and left ventricular disfunction are often seen complications in diabetic patients, and increase mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to observe the functions of the left ventricular in diabetes mellitus patients with CAN. The subjects did not have cardiovascular symptoms, and there were not myocardial ischemia and infarction signs in their electrocardiograms. There were two groups in our study. In the first group there were 60 (mean age 53.28  9.56) diabetes mellitus patients with CAN. In the second group (control group) there were 30 (mean age 51.35  8.61 ) healthy people. In the all subjects, the functions of left ventricle are investigated by radionuclide ventriculography (RNV). The ratio of the patients with left ventricular sistolic disfunction is % 8 in the first group and % 3 in the second group. There was no significant difference between group I and group II in regard to sistolic disfunction (p>0.05). The ratio of the patients with left ventricular diastolic disfunction is % 62 in the first group and % 3 in the second group. There was significant difference between group I and group II in regard to diastolic disfunction (p<0.05). As a result it was concluded that diabetes mellitus patients with CAN should be carefully investigated in regard to left ventricular diastolic disfunction and RNV is a suitable method to evaluate left ventricular functions.

Pages 25 - 27
Between October 1996 and October 1997, blood cultures that applied to our Microbiology Laboratory at the Medical Faculty of Gaziantep University were examined. The incidence of Salmonella in blood cultures and their antibiotic susceptibilities were evaluated. Out of 240 positive blood cultures 79 (32.92%) were Salmonella spp. The identification of the isolates showed that 44 (55.70%) of them were Salmonella typhi, 22 (27.85%) were S. Paratyphi A and 13(16.46%) were other Salmonella species.

Sema Ağaoğlu
Pages 28 - 30
The purpose of this study was to predict the existeuce of aflatoxin B1 in crushed red peppers sold unpacked in Van. In this study totally 40 crushed red pepper samples were used as materials. These samples were examined for moisture, water activity (aw) degree and aflatoxin B1 content. The results of analysis of crushed red pepper samples; the average moisture were determined as 12.85+0.72 %, value of water activity (aw) degree 0.742+0.006 All of the samples were contaminated with aflatoxin B1 at different levels (1.10-44.00 ppb).

Methanol is a toxic fluid which founds in a lot of substance such as solvents, antifreeze and paint removers. 20-250 ml methanol may be toxic and neuronal changes with brain and brainstem edema, putaminal necrosis develop within 12-24 hours. İn this paper, we reported cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in a case with methanol intoxication which is rarely seen in the light of the literature related.
