| 1. | Brucellosis Seropositivity In Human And Animal Population In Some Villages Of Van Province Ebubekir Ceylan, Hasan Irmak, Turan Buzğan, M. Kasım Karahocagil, Ömer Evirgen, Nurten Sakarya, Hayrettin Akdeniz, A. Pekcan Demiröz Pages 1 - 5 Aim: To evaluate of the prevalence of brucellosis among sheep, goats, cattle and their owners in villages of Van. Method:Blood samples were taken from 558 humans, 336 sheep, 51 goats and 129 cattle from 5 villages in the region of Van between June 2002 and September 2002. Rose Bengal (RB) and Standard tube agglutination (STA) tests were applied to sera. Results: Seropositivity for brucellosis in humans, sheep, goats and in cattle by RB were 26,7 %, 19,6 %, 21,5 % and 20,9 % and by STA were 27,5 %, 22,9 %, 21,5 % and 21,7 % respectively. These ranges obtained from this region are higher then average brucella test results in animal sera obtained randomly from different cities of Turkey. Conclusion: Brucellosis struggle is below of the targeted levels in Turkey in general and especially in this region and vaccination should be continued swiftly and fastidiously. |
| 2. | Investigation of the effects of protozoa on the growth of pathogen bacteria in the intestine M. Güzel Kurtoğlu, Yaşar Göz, Selma Gülmez, Oğuz Tuncer, Ebubekir Ceylan, Mustafa Berktaş Pages 6 - 9 Aim: This study was performed to investigate the possible counter effects of the protozoa and the pathogen bacteria in the intestine together with their percentages of coexistence. Method: In the first group of the study, 50 patients who are found protozoa in their stool examination were used. In the second group, the stool samples were examined in 50 patients who are not found protozoa. Results: In the first group of 50 patients, 3 (6%) Salmonella typhi, 1 (2 %) Shigella dysenteriae, totally 4 (8%) pathogen bacteria were found, in the second group of 50 patient, it was not found any pathogen bacteria. Conclusion: At the end of the study, in the stool samples found protozoon, it was found possible pathogen bacteria growth paralel with the conclusion in similar studies and it is concluded that these two tests should be planned together. |
| 3. | Drug Resistans Rates In Eyup-Istanbul Tuberculous Struggle Dispensary Between 1997-2000 Years Fahrettin Talay, Sedat Altın, Levent Karasulu, Şenol Kümbetli Pages 10 - 15 Aim: Anti-tuberculous drug resistance percentages in İstanbul Eyüp Tuberculous Struggle Dispensary between 1997 and 2000. Method: Anti-tuberculous drug resistance of 189 culture positive active pulmonary tuberculosis patients followed up and treated by our dispenser between January 1997 and December 2000 were evaluated. Mean age was 32.2?14.4 (M; 163, F; 26), 135 patients had no prior anti-tuberculous treatment and 54 patients had minimum one month of treatment. Results: Resistance was 25.9 % (19.2% primary and 42.6% secondary) and multi-drug resistance was 6.8% (3% primary and 16.6% secondary). Primary resistance for drugs were as follows; INH 8.9%, RIF 3%, MPZ 3%, EMB 2.2%, SM 13.3%, secondary resistance were; INH 22.2%, RIF 22.2%, MPZ 14.8%, EMB 11.3%, and SM 18.5%. Conclusion: Our resistance percentages were higher when compared to national and international data and similar to percentages of developing countries. National control program should be revisited across the country and for high treatment success, resistant cases should be considered carefully and their treatment should be done by experienced centers. |

| 4. | MRI Findings In A Case Of Primary Sacral Hydatid Cyst Beşir Erdoğmuş, Önder Şahin, Ümran Yıldırım Pages 16 - 18 Hydatid cyst is a parasitary infection. Spinal hydatid cyst is less than 1% of all hydatid cysts. Sacral hydatid cyst that is composed of 20 % of all spinal hydatid cyst is seen rarely. In this study, we aimed to present MRI findings of our patient with hydatid cyst showing multicompartment involvement in sacral area |
| 5. | Coronary Revascularization Approach With Beating Heart In An Early Period Stomach Adenocarcinoma Case Ufuk Yetkin, Ali Gürbüz Pages 19 - 22 In cardiac operations of patients with other system carcinomas, many problems appear due to cardiopulmonary bypass and special care. Our patient was a 63 years old man and had abdominal and chest pain during last 3 months. His tests were done in General Surgery Clinic and esophagogastroduodenoscopy and biopsies were taken. In hystopathologic study, biopsy showed thimble cell adeno Ca and because tumoral cell number was minimal, it was accepted as early stomach Ca and gastrectomy was planned by General Surgeons. His preoperative ECG with effort was positive, so coronary angiography was recommended and we found 99% after 1. diagonal stenotic lesion at left anterior descending artery. We performed coronary bypass with beating hearth and an aortLAD bypass with saphenous vein graft. He was taken to the service from intensive care unit at postoperative first day and no problem was developed and he was discharged with surgical cure at 6th day. With acceptable risks, coronary bypass operations can be performed in Ca patients. Successful CABG results improve the symptoms, and quality of life and survival and surgical procedures for essential cancer pathology can be done with a very low risk rate. |

| 6. | The Methods for Measurement of Anti-inflammatory Activity Hanefi Özbek, Abdurrahman Öztürk Pages 23 - 28 Drug investigations have a pivotal role in todays’ health care system. A fundamental part of these efforts, the animal studies and the applied tests have been greatly improved in the past years. Animal experiments with antiinflammatory drugs and the investigational methods are now among popular subjects in experimental pharmacology. In this article, the methods and the instruments used in the measurement of antiinflammatory activitiy were described. |
